Should I get genetic testing for breast cancer…or NOT? (plus join me for a breast cancer fundraiser)

We just celebrated Thanksgiving weekend in Canada. The leaves are changing. The sun has been brilliant and warm. I made fresh soup (lots of it). My husband and I cleaned and organized the house in preparation for our first move from our home of the past 19 years (more to come on that – super excited!). And we shared some valuable “family-time” out of our daily nine-to-five routine. What could be better…honestly!

I have so much to give thanks for.

Love. Family. Dreams-coming-true. Good health.

Ah yes, good health…a place my thoughts have gone to a lot lately. Partially because of the other significant thing that October represents…breast cancer awareness month.  When I was 16, I didn’t know much about cancer and certainly didn’t know you could be diagnosed with cancer in your “breast.” How bizarre!

One year later, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 41. Awareness was limited then, not at all like the “PINK” phenomenon we know today. Since that time, while breast cancer awareness has increased rapidly, the disease continues to rear it’s ugly head in my family and across the globe, as the most common cancer in women worldwide.

Since my mother was diagnosed, four of her five sisters have been diagnosed with breast cancer, along with three of her first cousins.  (My mother died in 1997 from a secondary cancer, colon cancer, which was diagnosed 12 yrs later). Crazy as it may be, I never considered genetic testing “seriously” until this year, as my mom’s youngest sister continues to undergo treatment.

With all the news about Angelina Jolie’s choice to undergo genetic testing and a subsequent double mastectomy, combined with my maternal family history, my sister and I have been asking the question, “Should I get genetic testing for breast cancer or not?”… A LOT lately.

I have always been of the mindset, that even if we were to get the testing done, and it revealed that we carry the gene, it is still NOT a guarantee that we WILL be diagnosed with breast cancer in our lifetime. Feels like an exercise of fear of, “what if” something happens.

But then there is the other side of the debate, prevention, which I think about. I’m still young. I have three little girls, a hubby, a growing business and a long bucket list of accomplishments still to be realized…the thought of being slowed down by this disease and the inconvenience it would create is less than appealing. No two boobies are worth that.

Reading up on it only offers more confusion with countless arguments both FOR and AGAINST it as an effective prevention of the disease, and many experts still labeling it as extreme and unnecessary in many cases.

So the question remains…to test or not to test?

Of course it doesn’t end there, testing means that we have to give some thought to what we do with the results.

It’s a BIG old complicated issue, but as with many other women with a strong family history of the disease, like mine, it’s the elephant in the room. I’m thinking about it. I’ll keep you posted as to my next steps and would love to hear your personal experiences.

In the meantime, I’ve created a little fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, called AMAZING YOU! I’d love you to join us for an afternoon that will inspire and empower women to live their most AMAZING life, while having fun, and helping raise money for a good cause.

Oh Beautiful July – you are the perfect month to start again!

In fact, today is the birthday of my dear friend Erika Heller. Inspired by her life and love, she is the person who sparked this global grassroots movement, I BELIEVE SHE’s AMAZING. We successfully launched the YouTube Video that has travelled the world and reached close to 2,000,000 people (WOW so incredible to think it happened from my kitchen table with NO social media experience). We have delivered an inspirational quote on our Facebook page every day since this campaign was launched three years ago. I now understand the breadth and depth of what we have created and how much joy, purpose and meaning it has brought myself and so many others around the world. Grateful beyond words for this soul-centered endeavor that helped give “meaning” to such a sad loss.

Erika’s death, at just 31 years of age, is a reminder that we are here for a short time and the importance of doing what we love, following our hearts, connecting with others, living our life to the fullest, and above all believing in ourselves. And so with that, I am kick-starting this blog with weekly and honest updates on how to live your most amazing life. Because, truly, at the end of the day, isn’t that exactly what we are all striving for? Magical discoveries and opening up to what our true calling is.

I am on this journey with you, finding our way through life and all it’s multi-colored moments. I have so many amazing life experiences to share. I hope that what you find here helps make YOUR journey a little easier. I was originally planning to take this community to the next level behind the scenes then share it with the world once everything was done. But that would only delay this journey even more, and I cannot wait any longer, so I will unfold it as I go and share with you along the way. I am working on so many exciting things, I cannot wait to grow with you and live our most AMAZING lives together in this space.

This is a place to be re-ignited, to find guidance in life and in business. It is a safe haven for you to learn to love yourself, your life and to find gratitude in all you do (things I have learned and continue to fine-tune). For all those of you who have ever felt that you are destined for more than what you are currently doing; if you have felt overwhelmed, disappointed or confused by where to start and how to transition into a new life; if you have wondered what the next step was or how you got so far off track; if you are longing to live your most AMAZING LIFE ever in every aspect-health, love, career and wealth-than welcome to this community.

I Believe She’s Amazing is a community of like-minded people on a mission to live their most AMAZING life, to blow past fear and commit to living FULL ON. It is a community that recognizes and acknowledges the AMAZING people in our lives, in the moment. A group that lives in gratitude, inspired by one another, rooting each other on and sharing in each others unique journey at all the magical points where our lives intersect.

Like you, I am a work in progress. We are ALL a work in progress, thankfully, cause that is our reminder that we are alive. And what a gift this life is. I am so excited for this next step to unfold. Kim MacGregor I Believe She's Amazing Award winning Author, Inspirational Speaker

Today is your day!

Dr Suess was BRILLIANT!

He wrote some of the most profound and inspiring material I have read. When I started writing children’s books, I read everything he had written. His stories, although entertaining, are deeply meaningful at any age. One of my very favorite books is Oh, The Places You’ll Go! and one of the most meaningful quotes I have ever read comes from the same book:

Oh the places you'll go Dr Seuss Kim MacGregor

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”

Who isn’t this fitting for?

As an entrepreneur, this is how I live my life. As a mother, this is how I encourage my three little girls to live their lives. And they do! Even the most challenging goals they set for themselves are achievable when they apply effort along with work and an understanding and belief that today is their day.

Regardless of your age, try living by this creed for the next month and see how it changes your life. If children as young as 8, 10 or 13 years old can create IMPACT in their lives and in the world around them by embracing the motto that TODAY IS YOUR DAY than YOU CAN TOO!

Believe that good things await you…you’re off to great places! And when that nagging voice of disbelief sets in tell yourself to GET ON YOUR WAY! No really SHOUT it to yourself to wake you out of your moment of complacency.

Today IS your day. Today is really THE DAY! It is the only moment we have to create the life we dream of… to climb our mountain. We just have to get out of our own way, so we can GET ON OUR WAY!

What are you waiting for???

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Never stop believing one person can make a difference… that one person is YOU!

You ARE enough!

Uncover the mirror and stare at yourself for just a moment.Norman Rockwell's Girl at Mirror. I Believe She's Amazing Kim MacGregor
Silence your inner critic when you do this…this is the point.
See ALL that you are.
Unique.
Beautiful – in a way that ONLY you can be.
Unlike any other – and that’s the way it SHOULD BE.
Just stare in quiet reverie for all that you have done. For every painful, joyful, difficult, laughable, lovable experience that has brought you to where you are this very moment and know this to be REAL and TRUE – YOU ARE ENOUGH!

Shhhhh. Silence your inner critic. She’s trying to laugh at you, to tell you what is wrong and where you lack. Tell her, “NOT now. This is my moment thank you very much.”

You are enough.

You are enough of whatever you think you are not. The notion that you need something more, or something less, to make you whole is just a lie that’s being sold to make you feel inadequate.

Do NOT buy in to it? You are smarter than that.

You are enough to start something new.
To change what isn’t working.
To love and be loved.
You are enough to own this moment as your very own moment to shine.
You are enough to create something for the whole world to see.
You are enough to make a difference.
For heavens sake you already do.

You are enough!

Take off the HOLD button that has you paralyzed with fear, that has you convinced that you need to wait UNTIL you are enough. Press PLAY and RECORD at the same time and START. Do not wait one more day to play big in your own life. Because the truth is this…you ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH.
This IS your life now. What are you waiting for?
Whatever you don’t know YET, you WILL figure out as you go. Isn’t that what you have always done?

Now look at yourself again. Do you see something different?
Do you see potential?
And possibility?
Do you see brilliance and creativity?
Do you see that what you have right now is enough?

Is that little voice of doubt getting more distant?
Silence her with stronger, bolder words.
With thoughts that serve you.
Silence her with ACTION and PLAY.
Silence her with TRUTH.

Look at yourself and repeat…
I am enough.
I AM enough.
I – AM – ENOUGH!

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Never stop believing one person can make a difference…that one person is YOU!

Get out of your own way and get going

Start Kim MacGregor

Sometimes the most difficult thing to do is start.
* start exercising
* start a family
* start doing what you love
…you get the picture.

Starting is a challenge because it requires ACTION.
We are great at dreaming, thinking about things, wishing things were better, or different, but when it comes to starting something we innately understand that it involves change from status quo…change from what we are currently doing.

It involves us stepping out of our comfort zone.

Starting often goes hand in hand with stopping some other behavior that isn’t working for us. Just as you can’t open your eyes and close them AT THE SAME TIME, you can’t start working your dream, if you don’t stop procrastinating.

The part of the equation that stalls us is fear of the unknown, feeling unprepared-like we just don’t know everything we need to know yet to “do it,” which really boils down to a lack of trust in ourselves and our ability to make it through.

I can tell you this, regardless of what we do, we learn as we go and in doing so, we gain trust in ourselves and our ability to handle whatever comes our way. Pick anything; parenting, marriage, writing a book, learning to ride a bike. You can’t know everything there is to know before you begin. Life doesn’t work that way. In every situation, we learn as we go. It’s the gift of experience.

Go Kim MacGregor But the key word is GO – we’ve got to get GOing.

So go ahead and set your sites on the horizon. Open your eyes. Unfurl your sails and let the wind of action set you free. You are smarter and more resourceful than you give yourself credit for. You’ll learn new skills, maybe experience a touch of choppy water, but just like all the other great adventurists, you’ll adjust your sails as you go.

And as long as you keep your eyes on the shore, on your destination, you WILL arrive!

But only if you start, if you set sail and leave the shore, can you explore the beauty and grandeur of new islands and a life you LOVE living.

Let’s start together shall we.

Keep me updated on what you are doing and how it’s going and I will do the same. And for heavens sake, if you need a bit of coaching, or a little nudge don’t hesitate to ask me for help. Deal? Deal!

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Never stop believing one person can make a difference…that one person is YOU!

I’m Baaaacckkk and here to welcome 2013!

Hello there!

I am back after a very long absence.

Lots of life changes happened and that precious gift of “time” eluded me. Jobs, children, lessons, responsibilities, commitments…you get the drill. I’m sure you’ve “been there” too. I got busy and distracted and a little off course. But I am reminded of what I LOVE so much about THIS DAY. It is unlike any other that has come before. It is THE day for fresh starts and new beginnings. It is a day that is forgiving of what WAS and open to what IS. It is our day to seize, and to begin again as if it were the first time.

I am happy to be back here in this space with you and with so much juice and yumminess to be shared. Thanks partially to our new friend 2013 and her faithful greeter January 1st. Oh I know it’s JUST a day…but it really is a time to reflect on what’s working, what isn’t and what is calling my name, my heart, my soul. You guessed it…this community of AMAZING people is calling me and I am ever so grateful to all of you for being here, writing me, sharing your stories and asking for more. I am cooking up lots of exciting things as I enter this year of expansion and LIVING FULL ON!

I launched my first ever newsletter today!!! YIPPEE!!! Can’t tell you how long I thought about that one so to finally release it feels sooooo goooood! I got my new headshots taken for when I expand my website (oh yes that’s something else I’m working on). And I am finally expanding my coaching business (thank you for all your requests). I look forward to working with more people and to helping you start living the life you LOVE. So many more exciting new things are in the works I will be sharing in the coming days and weeks.

Little by little, one step at a time, I am checking things off my bucket list and loving it!

My Bucket List

We are in this life together, connected in some magical way. It is good and wonderful. And I remain ever-grateful.

If you would like to be added to the newsletter list or to inquire about working with me to get all the juiciness out of your life and get on purpose with what you were put here to do – you can email me at: IBelieveShesAmazing@gmail.com

Stay tuned…there is so much amazingness ahead.

Make it your best day ever!

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Never stop believing one person can make a difference… that one person is YOU!
